Jeju is built around one giant mountain: Hallasan, a massive dormant volcano rising straight out of the sea, and the highest peak in South Korea.
There’s a folk gloss that says its name means a mountain high enough to pull down the galaxy. And on Hallasan, elevation changes faster than your instincts—one trail can feel like several climates stacked together, from warm, lush lowlands up to wind-cut shrubs near the top. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a small Jeju roe deer slipping through the brush.
At the summit sits a crater lake called White Deer Lake. In an old legend, immortals came down from heaven to ride magical deer that drank there.
Hallasan is strictly protected, so you can’t camp overnight. And if you want to hike all the way to the crater lake, you’ll need to reserve your entry online before you go. These paths hold more than scenery—nature, geology, and human history are all layered into this one mountain.
