Bukchon means Northern Village. For centuries, this hillside between two royal palaces was Seoul’s most prestigious address. And walking it now, it’s easy to assume you’re looking at something simply preserved.

But part of what feels ancient here was also engineered—rebuilt and standardized in ways you can still spot if you know where to look.

Hundreds of traditional houses, called hanoks, still stand along these steep alleys. As you climb, you move between stone walls and dark, curved tile roofs. Some of the hanoks have become quiet tea houses or guesthouses.

The most important thing to know is this: Bukchon is not a museum. It’s a real neighborhood. Families live behind these wooden doors. So as you wander, keep your voice down. Slow your pace, look closely at the carved wooden pillars, and let the streets stay quiet.
